Pat left the ring, grinning from her last round and slid off Delilah’s back. She gave the mare’s reins to Meghan and took the ones belonging to Chester from Gwen. Springing lightly onto his back, she walked him over to the entrance gate.
“Number nine, Patricia Douglas on FRF Chessman’s Knight.”
Pat spurred Chester foreward into the ring and after a bunny-hop from the gray pony, they were cantering to the first fence.
Pat was always amazed how the tiny pony was able to leap over jumps like her own mare, despite being at least three hands shorter. She was grateful for his short legs and small body, though, because he could take short turns quicker than the much larger horses they competed against.
They popped over the first fence, a quick turn to the second, and another tight turn to the third. Chester chipped in to get another stride before taking off, throwing his rider off balance. Pat landed hard on his back and he bucked, making her lose both stirrups.
“Little bugger,” Pat muttered, fighting to get her stirrups back as well as turn him to the fourth fence. She managed to get her right foot in before take-off, and as they approached the fifth she crammed her other foot into the stirrup. She began two-pointing as Chester lifted off, and as she put her weight into her heels she felt her left leg slipping out beneath her. The stirrup sailed towards the ground, knocking against the pole as it fell.
They landed on the other side, Chester bucking, Pat cursing under her breath while trying to steer the pony towards the next jump. She let her right foot slip out of the remaining stirrup, and feeling much more balanced, she clenched Chester’s sides between her legs. They thundered on to the next jump. As the gray pony sprung into the air, Pat closed her eyes and hung on for the ride.
What a little bugger. It's a good thing he's cute.
